One can always detect the preferred heresy of the age by what is removed from the Bible. So, before we look at the USCCB’s Bible translations, let’s look at two examples of what heretics over the last 500 years have removed from their own versions of the Bible.
1) The Protestant rebels removed Maccabees because of Purgatory. Maccabees is like the Braveheart of the Old Testament. It’s one of the most exciting books of the Bible, so no one should have removed it. But the 16th century heretics like Martin Luther removed 1 and 2 Maccabees because it showed Purgatory and the necessity of sacrifice for the dead. Here’s the Bible:
Then under the tunic of each one of the dead, they found sacred tokens of the idols of Jamnia, which the law forbids the Jews to wear. And it became clear to all that this was the reason these men had fallen. So they all blessed the ways of the Lord, the righteous Judge, who reveals the things that are hidden; and they turned to supplication, praying that the sin that had been committed might be wholly blotted out.—2 Maccabees 12:40-42a.
Basically, the above section is saying that fallen Jewish soldiers were found with good-luck charms or superstitious amulets on their dead bodies. But because they died for Israel, it was understood they were saved. Yet because their faith was tainted with superstition, they needed Purgatory. Thus, the people who found their dead bodies prayed and sacrificed for them. Obviously, this is not something one would do for a pure martyr.
Mr. Gary Michuta explains the historical drama of what happened in the 16th century with the above passage:
“When Luther was cornered in a debate over Purgatory, his opponent, Johann Eck, cited 2 Maccabees against Luther’s position. Luther was forced to say that Second Maccabees could not be allowed in the debate because it wasn’t canonical. Later in the debate, Luther appealed to St. Jerome for rejecting Maccabees (the councils of Carthage, Hippo, and Florence all included Macabees as canonical Scripture). By appealing to Jerome, he also rejected all the other books Jerome rejected (Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, Tobit, Judith, 1st and 2nd Maccabees, Daniel 13, and sections of Esther).”
The article linked above then gently explains why St. Jerome got that wrong. Basically, St. Jerome made a mistake surrounding the manuscript error he couldn’t have known about. Obviously, the doctor of the Church did not make a theological error. But Luther turned it into a theological error, cherry-picking the past to support his rejection of the perennial dogma of Purgatory that was found not only in tradition, but also Scripture.
Thus, the preferred heresy of the age of Protestants removed Maccabees because of Purgatory. (You can also research the other books the “reformers” took out of the Catholic Bible.)
2) Mormons and Jehovahs Witnesses changed their New Testament to reject the Divinity of Christ. Neither Mormons nor Jehovahs Witnesses (JWs) are Christian since they reject the Trinity and the Divinity of Christ. Mormons only came onto the scene in the 1830s and JWs starting in the 1870s. Think of how late in the game these heresies are! Yet they have the gall to reject the Divinity of Christ. To execute such a heresy, they also believed they had to change the Bible.
As you probably know, most Traditional Latin Masses end with the Final Gospel as John 1 on the Incarnation. The end of Mass begins with these words: In principio erat Verbum, et Verbum erat apud Deum, et Deus erat Verbum... Notice there, “the Word was God.” Yet sadly the JWs use their own made-up translation of the Bible called the New World Translation which brazenly changes the words “the Word was God” to “The Word was a god.”
Do you see the subtle difference? Shockingly, the religious leaders of Mormons and JWs will hesitantly admit they’re polytheists if pushed. Hence, they believe Christ was only a god, not the True and Living God. To support such a heresy, they obviously had to change the Bible very late in the history of Christianity. (You can research how the Mormons also gutted the Bible and then added a bunch of moronic books like the Book of Moroni.)
3) A new Bible from the USCCB white-washes the most disordered of all sexual sins.
Are you starting to see a pattern here? As the sub-title of my article says: “One can always detect the preferred heresy of the age by what is removed from the Bible.” So also, it should not be a stretch to assert that the USCCB may have a penchant for buggery if they feel the need to promote a ridiculous Bible translation to support their moral heresies.
Before we get to that translation, let’s review the history of the despicable New American Bible (NAB.) The NAB was first introduced into the lectionary of Bible readings at American Novus Ordo Masses (NOM) in the 1970s. But since 2002, the NAB has been the only approved edition in English for the NOM in the United States.
First of all, this is unfortunate due to numerous translation errors. But secondly, and worse, we know the footnotes of the NAB promote not only a historical-critical approach to the Bible but even a literary-critical approach to the Bible. In other words, the footnotes to the NAB repeatedly deny the inerrancy of Scripture and the miracles of the Old Testament and New Testament.
On top of this, royalties for that careless and heretical translation apparently stuff the pockets of the USCCB with over $2M a year. The Pillar basically reported how they gouge the faithful for money for that bad translation: “The U.S. bishops’ conference told bishops last month that if parishes want to reprint Scripture in bulletins or worship aids, they need to pay USCCB licensing fees for the privilege.”
Yet the NOM itself in every country across the globe has missing Bible passages, regardless of translation. John Lamont recently wrote: “Uncomfortable Scriptural passages present in the traditional lectionary have been removed from the Novus Ordo lectionary. For example, there are no Scriptural readings in the Novus Ordo that condemn sodomy and the unworthy reception of the Eucharist, and Matthew 24:15-35, which describes the advent of false prophets, persecution, and the end of the world, has been removed.”
But things are about to get shaken up even more in 2027. OSV reports: “A new English version of the Bible will be released in 2027 with the name The Catholic American Bible, according to Bishop Steven J. Lopes, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Divine Worship… The Catholic American Bible [CAB] will replace the New American Bible [NAB].”
Now we get to the very heretical Bible translation mentioned at the beginning of this section. The USCCB is now proposing lay folks bring home a new private-devotion Bible translation (not for liturgical use like the CAB) called the New Revised Standard Version updated edition (clunkily abbreviated as NRSVue.)
Why is it so bad? The SSPX explains: “The recent approval by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) of a new Bible translation for non-liturgical use has sparked controversy, as several experts criticize the revised version for softening the Church’s teaching on homosexuality.”
Or, if you don’t like the SSPX, consider now how a site called Catholic Review (apparently a production under the Archdiocese of Baltimore) cited how even a Protestant Bible scholar named Gagnon had moral problems with the upcoming NRSVue: “In a 2022 Facebook post, Gagnon said the NRSVue updates served to ‘gaywash and eliminate clear reference to homosexual practice’ in both 1 Cor 6:9 and 1 Tim 1:10.'”
Yep, the NRSVue translation deliberately leaves out the fact God Himself holds disordered sexual actions to be a serious sin. These heretics purposely white-wash the Bible from sins that cry out to heaven for vengeance.
To summarize all three groups mentioned above, we see the Protestants removed Purgatory from the Bible because they like to picture themselves going straight to heaven after a single altar call. The JWs and Mormons removed the divinity of Christ from the Bible because they’re like to picture each of themselves as “a god.” And the USCCB removed sodomy from their translation of the Bible because they like, well… you can see the pattern here.
